Threads of Accra

Threads of Accra tells the story of the growing textile industry in Ghana to make clothing and popular accessories. The film illustrates the prevalence and popularity of the textile shops in Accra, specifically in Makola Market in the capital city. The two main subjects of the film, a local textile-shop owner and seamstress, share their personal stories of what the fabrics and clothing mean to them and their identities. The film narrates the history of textiles in Ghana from the pre-colonial period to the modernization of common textile prints such as Kente cloths. This project was carried out through NYU Accra’s Film Department and Eleni worked along her student team of Emanuel A. and Allujanatt A.
